Details That Matter

Header Styles

French Pleat: Three-fold pleats, traditional and formal. Best for heavier fabrics.
Ripplefold: Contemporary waves via track. Clean, modern lines.
Inverted Pleat: Pleats fold inward for tailored look. Versatile style.

Fullness

2:1 Ratio: Minimum for proper drape. Standard for most applications.
2.5:1 Ratio: Luxurious fullness. Recommended for formal spaces.
3:1 Ratio: Maximum drama. Heavy fabrics become sculptural.

Lining Options

Standard: Cotton sateen. Provides body and UV protection.
Blackout: Blocks 95-99% light. Essential for bedrooms.
Interlining: Flannel layer adds insulation and luxury drape.

Hardware

Decorative Rods: Visible poles with finials. Classic choice.
Track Systems: Hidden mechanism. Modern, clean appearance.
Motorized: Remote or app control. Convenience and smart home integration.
From the Workbench
The math of window treatments is precise. A 60-inch window needs 120 inches of fabric at 2:1 fullness, but that\'s just the starting point. Add returns (fabric wrapping back to the wall), overlap for center-draw panels, hems, and header allowance. A seemingly simple window can require 180 inches of fabric before cutting. This is why we measure three times.

Window Solutions

[Bay window with harsh morning sun and no window treatments]

1 of 3

The Brownstone Bay Window

A beautiful bay window facing the street, but the morning sun made the room unusable until noon. We installed floor-to-ceiling lined drapes on a curved track system, with a middle panel that could be drawn independently. The client can now control light room by room while maintaining the architectural drama of the bay.

Fabric Choice:Medium-weight linen with standard lining
Time Invested:5 weeks including custom curved track fabrication
Challenge:Engineering a track system that follows the bay curve while supporting the weight of interlined drapes

Case Studies by Window Type

Bay Windows

The challenge: maintaining the architectural presence while controlling light across multiple angles. We use custom-bent track systems or individual panels that can be drawn independently. The key is treating the bay as a unified element, not three separate windows.

Tall Narrow Windows

The challenge: emphasizing height without making the window look skinny. We hang drapes wide (extending 8-12 inches beyond the frame on each side) and long (floor-length or puddled). This visual trick makes both the window and ceiling appear taller than they are.

Sliding Glass Doors

The challenge: coverage without interference. Ripplefold track systems work brilliantly here—the panels stack compactly when open and glide smoothly when closed. We often recommend ceiling-mounting to maximize the visual height and keep the door threshold clear.

Corner Windows

The challenge: treating two adjacent walls as one unified element. We use continuous track systems that turn the corner, or carefully coordinated panels that create symmetry. The goal is enhancing the architectural feature, not fighting it.

Coordinating with Other Work

Window treatments are rarely designed in isolation. They share the room with your furniture, which might be newly slipcovered or reupholstered. We think about these relationships carefully.

If we\'ve just reupholstered your sofa in a textured wool, we might suggest smooth linen drapes for contrast. If your slipcovers are crisp white cotton, we might introduce warmth through window treatments in natural or gray linen.

The goal is cohesion without matching. Your room should feel considered, as though all the decisions were made by the same hand—even if they were made years apart.
